Ultrasound scans, without the wait.

Ultrasound uses sound waves to show live pictures, with no radiation. It is quick and painless, and often the best first test for the abdomen, pelvis, neck and soft tissues.

Areas we scan

Abdomen

Liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys and spleen, for example for gallstones or abnormal liver blood tests.

Pelvis

Womb and ovaries, or bladder and prostate.

Thyroid and neck

Neck lumps, swollen glands and thyroid nodules, when there is a clinical reason to scan.

Lumps and bumps

Soft tissue lumps under the skin, hernias and swellings.

Joints and tendons

Shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee, ankle and Achilles problems, often with the joint moving during the scan.

Abdominal aorta

Aneurysm screening for men aged 65 and over, or earlier with strong risk factors.

Echocardiogram

An ultrasound of the heart, for a murmur, breathlessness or a family history of heart muscle disease.

Your appointment

  • Usually 15 to 30 minutes. Cool gel on the skin and a small probe moved over the area.
  • Abdominal scans: you may be asked not to eat for a few hours beforehand.
  • Pelvic scans: you may be asked to arrive with a full bladder.
  • No radiation, so it is safe to repeat and safe in pregnancy.

Our team includes Nathan Briganti, an advanced practice physiotherapist and MSK sonographer, for joint and tendon problems.

Scans take place at accredited partner imaging centres in England. We confirm your nearest ultrasound centre when you book. You get the address and directions with your booking. See ultrasound centres on Scan Path.

Things to consider

Ultrasound cannot see through bone or air, so it is not used for the brain, lungs or most of the bowel. If another test would answer your question better, your GP will tell you.

We do not offer routine thyroid ultrasound for people without symptoms. In healthy people it often finds small, harmless nodules that lead to further tests without benefit.
